What grows in Eckington Woods compared to Renishaw Gardens?

Week 7

In PE this week, we have been working on our overarm and underarm throwing, competing in a throwing competition. We have also been using our developing tennis skills to play a simple game of tennis in a small tennis court. We have been working on missing numbers, subtracting, adding, multiplication and dividing in maths using lots of practical equipment, 100 squares and number lines. We have been reciting poetry in English and working on rhyming words. We created our own simple poems and performed them with our partners. In Computing, we have created block graphs using our colour tally charts to support. We have also been comparing data. Another fun but busy final week!

Week 6

This week in Year 1, we have been planning and writing our own version of the traditional tale, Little Red Riding Hood. In Maths, we have been recapping place value and numbers to 100 and addition. In PE, we have been learning the difference between a jump, a hop and a leap and learning how to increase our stamina during our athletics activities. We created Andy Goldsworthy inspired natural art pictures on the field in small groups and collected, sorted and compared 2D shape data in Computing. We finished the busy week doing the Colour Run (photos to follow), which was great fun!

Week 5

We completed our Traditional Tales modelled stories based on Little Red Riding Hood. We continued time in Maths working on telling the time to o'clock and half-past. We did a maths problem-solving activity to work out which animals had escaped from the zoo. We did some timed running in Athletics and some tennis racket skills in PE. We looked at features of trees and wild plants in Science. The children also had an amazing two days in Year 2 with Mr Blake.

Week 4

This week we have continued our Little Red Riding Hood traditional tale writing. We did a money investigation as a group before moving onto time in Maths. We have been learning how to loom weave using wool and create Mandalas in Art. In PE, we have been moving with speed and accuracy in athletics and learning how to track an opponent in net and wall. We have been learning how to celebrate our own success in Year 1 and work as a team to collect money stars to loan PE equipment to play with during Fresh-Air Friday. In computing, we have been collecting data with a partner using a tally chart. A busy but fun week!

Week 3

Miss Furniss' last week teaching Year 1 was a busy one! In Science, the children learned about flowers including planting and observing a sunflower seed and dissecting flowers to describe and name parts of them. The children were very lucky to have a planet themed workshop with Dr Grant, a senior lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University who taught them the distances between the planets. The children moved onto money in maths and continued to write their traditional tale based on Little Red Riding Hood. The children became data analysts in Computing, sorting out pictures and objects into categories for our data unit. The week finished with a hot, sweaty and fun sports day!

Week 2

This week in Year 1, we have been continuing with our place value and numbers to 100 in Maths. We have started to write the traditional tale Little Red Riding Hood for our writing focus. We created some incredible artwork of woodland animals using leaves and seeds. We started to learn about Judaism, starting with their holy day called the Sabbath. We made some Jewish bread called Challah Bread, which was lovely and sweet! We went on our history walk around some of the landmarks in Eckington including the church, the old police station, the old train station, Camms original school and headmaster's house and the old bakery/sweetshop! A very interesting week with lots of learning taking place.

Week 1

A fantastic start to the new term with a visit to Renishaw Hall and Gardens. The children were amazingly behaved and asked lots of questions throughout the day. We took part in a plant and flower hunt, some observational drawing, a group quiz and some basic orienteering using a map of Renishaw. We have also started our new maths learning on place value and numbers to 100. In Art, we have been using natural materials and clay to create our own garden inspired sculptures. We also took part in the Skills Day on Friday afternoon (photos will be on the website under gallery.)
