Important Information

Reading is vital in Year 1. Please aim to read at least 3 times a week with your child. Aim to read the books provided by school as these support your child's phonics learning, as well as, reading books from home or the library to encourage children to read for pleasure.

Reading records will be checked twice a week (Tuesdays and Fridays unless told otherwise) and books changed accordingly. If your child reads 3 times a week, they will move one character space on our Disney themed reading race. For each stage collected (4 characters per stage), it goes towards a Bronze (2 completed stages), a Silver (4 completed stages) or a Gold award (all 8 completed stages) at the end of the academic year.

At the end of the academic year, your child will receive the appropriate badge, sticker and certificate. More reading, more progress and a higher reward at the end of the year!

In Term 1 (Autumn Term 1) our PE Days are:

Afternoons

On this day, your child will need to come to school wearing their PE kit. Black leggings, shorts or joggers with house-coloured or white t-shirt with their school jumper, cardigan or fleece. Hair must be tied up or back with earrings covered with tape. Sensible footwear must be worn, ideally trainers. These sessions will be mainly outdoors with the children doing Fundamental Skills.

In Term 1 (Autumn Term 1) our Outdoor Creative Storytime day is:

Thursday Afternoons

On this day, your child needs to wear sensible clothing for outdoor learning (clothing that you don't mind them getting dirty!) They will need to bring a change of footwear, ideally old trainers or wellington boots. Your child will need to bring a waterproof coat with them every week, just in case! These sessions will focus on creative storytime and some outdoor learning/play.

In Term 1 (Autumn Term 1) we will be focusing on:

Maths - We will be counting forward and back within 10 and learning how to words numbers 0-10 as numerals and words. We will be focusing on the composition of the number upto and including 10 including finding one more and one less. We will be learning to add and subtract within 10 using different practical and written methods including the number line. We will be learning about 2D and 3D shapes.

English - We will be learning how to write a short adventure story based on the book 'The Queen's Hat'. We will be learning how to write a simple postcard, a label and how to compose short, simple sentences with a capital letter to start and a full stop to end. We will start to write short dictated words and sentences.

Phonics - We will be recapping Basics 2 and Basics 3 program of Supersonic Phonics Friends. These recap sessions will be focusing on phonemes, digraphs and trigraphs. Alongside the phonics program, the children will be learning to read and spell the first 12 Common Exception Words from the Year 1 spelling list.

Science - We will be learning about the four seasons of the UK including weather patterns and how the day and night length changes from Autumn to Winter. We will be learning how we adapt to these changes including looking at how animals adapt to seasonal changes too.

Any support at home with these areas of learning will be greatly appreciated. Please also see below for the online platforms that we have in school that can further support reading, phonics and maths.
