Important Information

Reading is vital in Year 1. Please aim to read at least 3 times a week with your child. Aim to read the books provided by school as these support your child's phonics learning, as well as, reading books from home or the library to encourage children to read for pleasure. Reading records will be checked twice a week (Tuesdays and Fridays unless told otherwise) and books changed accordingly. If your child reads 3 times a week, they will move one character space on our Disney themed reading race. For each stage collected (4 characters per stage), it goes towards a Bronze (2 completed stages), a Silver (4 completed stages) or a Gold award (all 8 completed stages) at the end of the academic year. At the end of the academic year, your child will receive the appropriate badge, sticker and certificate. More reading, more progress and a higher reward at the end of the year!

In Spring Term 2, our PE Days are:

Monday Afternoons

On this day, your child will need to come to school wearing their PE kit. Black leggings, shorts or joggers with house-coloured or white t-shirt with their school jumper, cardigan or fleece. Hair must be tied up or back with earrings covered with tape. Sensible footwear must be worn, ideally trainers. These sessions will be taught by Qualitas and will focus on Fundamentals.

Friday Mornings

On this day, your child will need to come to school wearing their PE kit. Black leggings, shorts or joggers with house-coloured or white t-shirt with their school jumper, cardigan or fleece. Hair must be tied up or back with earrings covered with tape. Sensible footwear must be worn, ideally trainers. These sessions will be focused on Invasion Games.

In Spring Term 1, our Outdoor Learning day is:

Thursday Afternoons

On this day, your child needs to wear sensible clothing for outdoor learning (clothing that you don't mind them getting dirty!) They will need to bring a change of footwear, ideally old trainers or wellington boots. Your child will need to bring a waterproof coat with them every week, just in case! These sessions will focus on creative storytime and some outdoor learning/play.

In Spring Term 2 we will be focusing on:

Maths - Place value and numbers within 50 including how to write them correctly as numbers. We will be using part/whole models, number lines and maths equipment to add and subtract within 50. We will also be recapping mass (weight) and volume using lots of practical learning and investigation.

English - We will be learning how to write adventure storyboards focused around Toy Story. We will be learning to use the prefix un, as well as, question marks to end sentences. We will be writing non-fiction leaflets on toys and games that were played by our grandparents and parents and compare these to toys and games we play now.

Phonics - Mrs Treweek's group will be focusing on Choose to Use, which looks at spelling rules for different spellings of the same sound (i.e. ai, ay, a-e.) Mrs Womble's group will be focusing on blends at the start and end of words before starting on Choose to Use spelling rules.

Science - We will be learning about everyday materials. We will be naming a variety of everyday materials, identifying objects that are made from different materials. We will be investigating which materials are waterproof and which are not. We will use different materials to construct for a purpose, deciding whether it's the most suitable material to use.

Any support at home with these areas of learning will be greatly appreciated. Please also see below for the online platforms that we have in school that can further support reading, phonics and maths.
