Reading is vital in Year 1. Please aim to read at least 3 times a week with your child. Aim to read the books provided by school as these support your child's phonics learning, as well as, reading books from home or the library to encourage children to read for pleasure. Reading records will be checked twice a week (Tuesdays and Fridays unless told otherwise) and books changed accordingly. If your child reads 3 times a week, they will move one character space on our Disney themed reading race. For each stage collected (4 characters per stage), it goes towards a Bronze (2 completed stages), a Silver (4 completed stages) or a Gold award (all 8 completed stages) at the end of the academic year. At the end of the academic year, your child will receive the appropriate badge, sticker and certificate. More reading, more progress and a higher reward at the end of the year!
In Spring Term 1, our PE Day is:
Tuesday Afternoons
On this day, your child will need to come to school wearing their PE kit. Black leggings, shorts or joggers with house-coloured or white t-shirt with their school jumper, cardigan or fleece. Hair must be tied up or back with earrings covered with tape. Sensible footwear must be worn, ideally trainers.
In Spring Term 1, our Outdoor Learning day is:
Friday Afternoons
On this day, your child needs to wear sensible clothing for outdoor learning (clothing that you don't mind them getting dirty!) They will need to bring a change of footwear, ideally old trainers or wellington boots. Your child will need to bring a waterproof coat with them every week, just in case! During Spring Term 1 outdoor learning, we will be learning some basic Bushcraft skills with Mrs Yeomans, as well as, enjoying creativity storytime and outdoor play. Any questions, regarding Bushcraft, please let me know.
In Spring Term 1 we will be focusing on:

English - We will be learning how to write diaries this term which will include personal pronoun I, as well as, using past tense verbs (ed). We will learn how to extend our sentences using conjunctions - and and but and how to use the plural rule when adding s to singular nouns. We will also be using our senses to write a senses poem.
Phonics - Mrs Treweek's group will be focusing on blends and polysyllabic words (words made up of more than 2 syllables before moving onto Choose to Use, which looks at spelling rules for different spellings of the same sound (i.e. ai, ay, a-e.) Mrs Womble's group will be re-capping Basics 3 digraphs and trigraphs before moving onto end and fronted blends.
Science - We will be learning about the body in Science this term including naming and labelling parts of the body. We will be using our senses to investigate different sights, smells, sounds, tastes and touches.
Any support at home which these areas of learning will be greatly appreciated. Please also see below for the online platforms that we have in school that can further support reading, phonics and maths.
