Reading is vital in Year 1. Please aim to read at least 3 times a week with your child. Aim to read the books provided by school as these support your child's phonics learning, as well as, reading books from home or the library to encourage children to read for pleasure. Reading records will be checked twice a week (Tuesdays and Fridays unless told otherwise) and books changed accordingly. If your child reads 3 times a week, they will move one character space on our Disney themed reading race. For each stage collected (4 characters per stage), it goes towards a Bronze (2 completed stages), a Silver (4 completed stages) or a Gold award (all 8 completed stages) at the end of the academic year. At the end of the academic year, your child will receive the appropriate badge, sticker and certificate. More reading, more progress and a higher reward at the end of the year!
In Summer Term 2, our PE Days are:
Tuesday Afternoons
On this day, your child will need to come to school wearing their PE kit. Black leggings, shorts or joggers with house-coloured or white t-shirt with their school jumper, cardigan or fleece. Hair must be tied up or back with earrings covered with tape. Sensible footwear must be worn, ideally trainers. These sessions will be mainly outdoors with the children doing sports day practise and athletics.
Friday mornings
On this day, your child will need to come to school wearing their PE kit. Black leggings, shorts or joggers with house-coloured or white t-shirt with their school jumper, cardigan or fleece. Hair must be tied up or back with earrings covered with tape. Sensible footwear must be worn, ideally trainers. These sessions will be mainly outdoor consolidating key skills in order to play different target games.
In Summer Term 2, our Outdoor Creative Storytime day is:
Thursday Afternoons
On this day, your child needs to wear sensible clothing for outdoor learning (clothing that you don't mind them getting dirty!) They will need to bring a change of footwear, ideally old trainers or wellington boots. Your child will need to bring a waterproof coat with them every week, just in case! These sessions will focus on creative storytime and some outdoor learning/play.
In Summer Term 2 we will be focusing on:
Maths - We will be counting forward and backwards in 1s within 100 and learning how to represent bigger numbers using 10s and 1s. We will be learning how to count in multiples of 2s, 10s and 5s whilst learning how to create arrays to show multiplication. We will learn how to divide and share using our fractions knowledge to support us. We will also learn about money and time before recapping addition and subtraction.
English - We will be learning how to write a traditional tale based on the story Little Red Riding Hood. We will learn how to write a comparison non-fiction leaflet about Renishaw Hall and Eckington Woods. We will learn how to create rhyming poems based on the poem Dark, Dark, Woods!
Phonics - Both phonics groups will be recapping digraphs, trigraphs and split digraphs taught so far before moving onto some Switch it Mitch sounds. Spellings and reading will be focused on Year 1's common exception words (grid sent via Parent Hub.)
Science - We will be learning how plants and flowers grow and what happens if they don't get what they need to grow. We will name and label parts of trees and flowers and name some of the most common ones found in Eckington and Renishaw.
Any support at home with these areas of learning will be greatly appreciated. Please also see below for the online platforms that we have in school that can further support reading, phonics and maths.
