Important Information

Reading is vital in Year 1. Please aim to read at least 3 times a week with your child. Aim to read the books provided by school as these support your child's phonics learning, as well as, reading books from home or the library to encourage children to read for pleasure. Reading records will be checked twice a week (Tuesdays and Fridays unless told otherwise) and books changed accordingly. If your child reads 3 times a week, they will move one character space on our Disney themed reading race. For each stage collected (4 characters per stage), it goes towards a Bronze (2 completed stages), a Silver (4 completed stages) or a Gold award (all 8 completed stages) at the end of the academic year. At the end of the academic year, your child will receive the appropriate badge, sticker and certificate. More reading, more progress and a higher reward at the end of the year!

In Summer Term 1, our PE Days are:

Tuesday Afternoons

On this day, your child will need to come to school wearing their PE kit. Black leggings, shorts or joggers with house-coloured or white t-shirt with their school jumper, cardigan or fleece. Hair must be tied up or back with earrings covered with tape. Sensible footwear must be worn, ideally trainers. These sessions will be mainly outdoors with the children learning striking and fielding skills.

Thursday Mornings

On this day, your child will need to come to school wearing their PE kit. Black leggings, shorts or joggers with house-coloured or white t-shirt with their school jumper, cardigan or fleece. Hair must be tied up or back with earrings covered with tape. Sensible footwear must be worn, ideally trainers. These sessions will be taught by a professional tennis coach called Paul and will start indoors but move outdoors once basic skills are taught.

In Summer Term 1, our Outdoor Creative Storytime day is:

Thursday Afternoons

On this day, your child needs to wear sensible clothing for outdoor learning (clothing that you don't mind them getting dirty!) They will need to bring a change of footwear, ideally old trainers or wellington boots. Your child will need to bring a waterproof coat with them every week, just in case! These sessions will focus on creative storytime and some outdoor learning/play.

In Summer Term 1 we will be focusing on:

Maths - Direction and position including up, down, left, right, clockwise, anti-clockwise and quarter and half turns. This maths learning will be consolidated through our computing using Beebots. We will also be learning fractions of shapes, objects and numbers including half and quarter. We will be revisiting addition and subtraction within 20 using written methods. We will look at counting beyond 50 forwards and backwards.

English - We will be learning how to write sci-fi adventure stories based on the book The Way Back Home. We will also write some non-fiction sentences about space, our space centre visit, as well as, writing instructions on how to make a rocket.

Phonics - Both phonics groups will be recapping digraphs, trigraphs and split digraphs taught so far. Both groups will be continuing on the Choose to Use unit of learning in preparation for the upcoming Phonics Screening Check in June 2026.

Science - We will be revisiting Seasonal Changes looking at how weather, weather patterns and day length vary between Spring and Summer.

Any support at home with these areas of learning will be greatly appreciated. Please also see below for the online platforms that we have in school that can further support reading, phonics and maths.
