INSPIRE - CREATIVE - WRITERS

Intent - Inspire

It is our intention to inspire children to achieve high standards in English regardless of their individual starting point. Our creative and engaging curriculum encourages children to bring writing to life and to develop a love of writing so that they can write a variety of genres and write for pleasure and enjoyment. It is our intention to differentiate learning through additional support and purposeful writing interventions focusing on identified gaps in knowledge, skills and writing ability, inspiring children to have a positive growth mind-set. Our teaching is underpinned by high quality texts and sentence stacking models which focus on skills to be taught or consolidated. Spelling, grammar and punctuation skills are practised and consolidated until all children have a firm understanding of how to apply them into their own independent work. 

Implementation - Creative

At Camm's, we implement the writing curriculum by covering the knowledge and skills outlined in the National Curriculum for each stage of their education from Early Years to Upper Key Stage 2. Our creative writing curriculum is now taught using a whole-class approach using a writing program designed by Jane Considine called 'The Write Stuff.' The implementation of this program ensures that all children take an active part in class discussions, exposing all children to some higher-level thinking, questioning, vocabulary and sentence stacking examples. We link our writing to our topic ensuring cross-curricular learning and spiral learning is taking place throughout school. We set high standards for writing and implement this high standard by having our non-negotiables for each year group set in place at the start of each academic year, focusing on writing presentation, correct letter formation and effective sentence structuring including correct use of punctuation.

We strive to inspire creative writers that achieve in line with their age-related expectations or exceed their potential when we consider their individual starting point. The impact of our writing curriculum should ensure that children can write for different purposes and in different contexts, using the taught skills and knowledge independently so that when they leave our school they are prepared for the next step in their English education and life beyond primary school.
