Hovercraft with Mr Cocking

 

Year 2 had a great time this afternoon (Thursday 6th July) making hovercraft in class. Thank you for sending in bottle tops and pumps. Make sure you ask your children what they discovered about friction.

Art in RE: The Creation Story

 

Year 2 enjoyed using pastels to create artwork inspired by our work on the Creation story found in the book of Genesis. Here is a slide show of their work.

Y2 Class Assembly

 

Well done Year 2 for all their hard work with their assembly today (Friday 30th June). We hope you enjoyed it!

Transport Topic

Forest Schools

 

Year 2 participated in some 'Forest School' activities this afternoon (Wednesday 28th June). Well done to all the children for braving the elements and having a go at some tricky challenges.

Crich Tramway Village

Seeds

 

Year 2 made their own helicopter seeds this afternoon (Friday 9th June). The children were learning about the ways seeds are dispersed.

Chocolate by Design Trip

Science Investigation

 

Year 2 investigated the strength of different types of paper today (Tuesday 4th April). Here are a few action shots of the children completing their investigations in small groups.

Library Visit

 

Year 2 had a great time at the library this afternoon (Friday 17th March). The children enjoyed listening to a story about the Great Fire of London. After the story, the children helped to create a display for the library.

SATS Information Meeting

 

A Y2 SATS information meeting for parents has been scheduled for Thursday 30th March at 9.05am. A letter and reply slip will be sent out this week so you can let us know whether you are able to attend.

World Book Day

A Special Visitor

 

Year 2 had a great time on Monday 28th February. Meghan Beesley, a GB hurdler, came to visit our school. Meghan helped to teach the children four different fitness actvities that the children completed to raise money for athletes like Meghan and for our school. The children enjoyed learning about Meghan's career to date at the end of the day.

Create a Bakery

 

Year 2 enjoyed creating a bakery in a shoe box this afternoon (Wednesday 22nd February) working in small groups. 

Estimate and Measure

 

Year 2 got outside this afternoon (Tuesday 21st February) and practised their skills of estimating and measuring in metres. The children were ask to think about a problem (related to measurement) with many of the houses in London in 1666 which caused the Great Fire to spread so quickly.

Pudding Lane Bakery

 

Year enjoyed some baking this morning (Friday 10th February) with Mrs Riley and Miss Clayton. Check out some action shots of the production line below.

Handwriting Competition

 

A big well done to Emily and Luke for winning the Year 2 handwriting competition. A big thank you to all the children for their fantastic entries and hard work this term.

Learning about 3D Shape

 

Some member of Year 2 got to grips with making 3D shapes from a net today (Wednesday 8th February). Check out some action shots below.

Pudding Lane Bakery

 

Year 2 have been enjoying time in their new role-play area this afternoon (Friday 3rd February). You will be pleased to know that no fires were reported.

Historical Artefacts

 

Mrs Morton came into class today (Friday 3rd February) and showed the children a variety of historical artefacts. Some of these artefacts dated back to the time of The Great Fire of London. Make your sure you ask your child what they were able to find out.

Gymnastics Festival

 

Year 2 enjoyed attending a gymnastics festival this afternoon (Thursday 2nd February). Here are a few photographs from the event.

New Topic: The Great Fire of London

 

Year 2 will begin their new topic on The Great Fire of London on Monday 23rd January. Please download a copy of our topic map and encourage the children to complete some topic homework at home.

A big thank you to Flora for baking the finest cookies Year 2 have ever tasted. Even the finest baker at Pudding Lane Bakery would have been proud of them. 

Class Assembly

Christmas Concert

 

Year 2 enjoyed singing 'Rockin' around the Christmas Tree' at this year's Christmas concert. Here is action shot of their performance.

Christmas Activities

 

Year 2 have had a very busy week with Christmas parties, special Christmas lunch, disco and a visit from Santa!

 

R.E

 

Year 2 spent some time today (Friday 9th December) thinking about what different characters in the Christmas would have been thankful for. The class also had time to think more personally as they considered what they are each thankful for. The children recorded their ideas on paper strips and used them to create this fantastic Christmas decoration for the Year 2 classroom.

Nativity

 

Well done to all the children for working so hard on their nativity play this term. We hope you all enjoyed their performance of 'A Miracle in Town'.

Christmas Fair

 

Thank you all for supporting us by buying items made by members of Year 2. So far, we have raised £86. The children will get opportunity to decide how this money should be spent.

Christmas Fair Order Form

 

Year 2 are now accepting orders for items they have made for the this year's Christmas fair (Friday 2nd December). The order form includes a special offer for pre-fair orders. Design and Technology

 

Members of Year 2 were testing out their sowing skills today (Wednesday 16th November). Check out some actions shots below. 

Hide and Seek

 

Year 2 had a quick game of hide and seek on Tuesday 15th November. The children had to give each other clues using positional words to help find hidden items in the classroom.

Children in Need

 

The children are invited to come to school wearing something spotty to school on Friday 18th November.

Anti-Bullying Week

 

This week (Monday 14th - Friday 18th November) the children will be covering work about how to be a good friend. The class will be reminded about how they can each contribute to making our school a good place to be. Please download the story below and enjoy reading and discussing it with your child at home. Library Visit

 

Year 2 had a fantastic afternoon at the library on Monday 7th November. The children listened to some funny poems about keeping fit and enjoyed participating in Mandy's aerobics exercise class.

Homes for Bees

 

This afternoon (Monday 17th October) the children created a home for solitary bees. Make sure you ask your child about how the bees will use them.

Outdoor Wildlife & Habitat Activities

 

Year 2 were outside this morning learning about minibeasts, habitats and food chains in our wonderful wildlife area. The children were able to use things they had brought in to create a home for nature. 

Getting into Shape

 

The children continued to work hard on a variety of shape activities today (Friday 14th October). The class are becoming more confident recognising right-angles. Emma was even able to calculate the number of right-angles in a letter shape.

P.E. Festival

 

Year 2 had a great time this afternoon (Thursday 13th October) at Eckington Comprehensive School where they attended a P.E. festival. Check out some of the action below...

Maths on the Move

 

Year 2 were out of their chairs this morning (Thursday 13th October) hunting for right-angles in the classroom. The children also played a game to reinforce their learning.

Fire Safety

 

Year 2 spent this afternoon (Wednesday 12th October) learning about fire safety. A big thank you to Mr Lloyd for coming in to speak to the children.

Spellings

 

Year 2 will now complete spelling assessments on a Monday. This will give the children a bit longer to work on their spellings over the weekend. Thank you for your valuable feedback in regards to this matter. 

Shoe Box Habitats

 

Year 2 enjoyed getting creative this afternoon (Friday 7th October). The children were challenged to create a suitable habitat for different habitats. Check out their efforts below...

Shoe Box Habitats

 

Year 2 got creative this afternoon (Thursday 6th October) making suitable habitats for different animals. 

Wildlife & Habitat Day: Monday 17th October

 

Derbyshire Willdife Trust will be helping Mr Blake to lead a 'Wildlife and Habitat Day' on Monday 17th October. The children will be hunting for minibeasts and helping to create different habitats on the school field. The children will need home clothes suitable for outdoor activities, wellies, a coat and a small plastic bottle for creating home for a bee. They are also invited to bring a bag of twigs, pebbles and pine cones to help them make a minibeast habitat in small groups.

 

Please speak to Mr Blake if you would like to volunteer to help out on this day (morning/afternoon/full day).

Grammar

 

The children enjoyed hunting for different nouns in the classroom today (Monday 3rd October). They wrote labels for the items they collected to create a mini museum. 

Shoe Box Habitats

 

This week (Monday 3rd - Friday 7th October) the children will be creating a shoe box habitat in small groups. The children will be thinking carefully about what animals need to survive and how different animals are suited to their own habitat. Please send in any shoe boxes you have at home to school with your children.

Spellings

 

A big well done to Grace, Evie-Mae, Ellis, Milani, William, Mia and India who all scored full marks in their spelling quiz today (Friday 30th September). 

Topic Homework

 

More fantastic topic homework has been brought into school this week. Thank you Evie-Ma, William and Mia for these super efforts.

Spellings

 

A big well done to Sofia, Emma, Gracie, Jasmine, Evie-Mae, Ellis, William, Milani, Emily, Flora, Georgia, Andrei and Lily who all scored full marks in their spelling quiz today (Friday 23rd September).

Researching Animals and Habitats

 

Year 1 enjoyed completing some research today (Friday 23rd September) on different animals and their habitats. They then presented the information they had found out in a poster.

Library Visit

 

Year 2 enjoyed their visit to Eckington library today. The children enjoyed listening to a book about a different animals, having a go at an animal-themed quiz and having time to select their own books. Mr Blake was able to borrow some books to use in school over the next week.

Outdoor Learning

 

The children were out and about this afternoon (Wednesday 21st September) doing some detective work. They worked hard grouping what they found (living, dead and things that had never been alive).

Topic Homework

 

Well done Flora for bringing this excellent piece of topic homework into school. Make sure you get creative at home this term to support our topic learning in school.

Assessment Folder

 

The children have worked hard completing reading and maths assessments over the last week. The children set up their own assessment folder today (Monday 19th September) to help them to recognise the value of their efforts. If you would like to find out more about how you can support your child's learning at home, please feel free to come into class for a few minutes after school on a Friday and have a look through their assessment folder.

Dictionaries

 

Year 2 set up their own dictionaries in class today (Friday 16th September). The children will be able to add words they are learning to spell throughout the year and refer to them in many writing tasks. Knowledge of letter names is essential to achieving progression in the area of spelling. Please do what you can to reinforce this knowledge at home.

Enterprise

 

Year 2 have still have £53.95 available to spend after their fundraising efforts last year. The children will have the chance to vote on how the money should be spent in the coming weeks.

 

New Topic: Bears, Bamboo and Bumble Bees

 

This term's topic will extend children's understanding about our world. The children will explore and compare the differences between things that are living, dead, and things that have never been alive.  Go to 'Our Topics' for more information.

Library Visit

 

A visit to Eckington library has been scheduled for Thursday 22nd September. Please let Mr Blake know if you are available to help with this visit.

10-Minute Maths

 

Year 2 have been challenged by Mr Blake to complete ten minutes of maths work before assembly every day. Today (Thursday 8th September) groups worked on calculating doubles or number bonds. This daily activity will also train all the children up as peer markers.

Furniture Solutions for The Three Bears

 

Today (Thursday 8th September) the children were challenged to make chairs (big, middle-sized one one small) and tables for The Three Bears. Check out their efforts below. Check out the nrich website if you want to have a go at other Stage 1 maths problems at home.
