Welcome to our Year 2 class
Welcome to Year 2. The class teacher is called Mrs Lilley and the teaching assistant is called Mrs Riley.
We are a happy class of 30 children. We work hard and love to gain certificates and stickers for our merit charts.
Our PE days are Tuesday afternoon and a Wednesday morning. We need a PE kit in school everyday.
Please bring book bags to school everyday as we read and change reading books as often as possible.
We also enjoy practising our spellings and playing maths games at home using Active Learn and the Purple Mash website. We will also be using a new website called Spag. com. to practice our punctuation and grammar.
We are working towards our Year 2 SAT s and practice everyday.
This autumn term's topic is called Bears, Bamboo and the Bumble bee. It is a cross-curricular topic based on the Year 2 science curriculum.
Also every child has been given a password for Spag.com. This is in the cover of their reading record book. This is an interactive programme for children to assess at home their spelling, punctuation and grammar work.
Children need to read their reading scheme book at home on a daily basis to support their progress. Re-reading books is essential for developing reading fluency and understanding when discussing the text.
Children will be set maths Active Learn homework throughout the year. Please let Mrs Lilley if you are unable to access these games at home.
There are 166 Year 1 and 176 Year 2 games available for allocation on the Active Learn website.
Purple Mash Online Homework and Educational Games
Children are taught to practise their spellings using the method: Read > Write > Cover > Check.
Spellings will be sent home every Monday for children to learn. Set spellings will then be assessed in a spelling quiz on Mondays.
Children will continue to get the opportunity this year to demonstrate their knowledge of spelling high frequency words in Year 2. Children will be awarded certificates for the relevant phase if they score 100% in an assessment quiz in class.
You can support your child's progress through these spelling levels by downloading the phase word grids and practising the words they find tricky at home. Please follow the link below.
Spelling and Grammar
Year 2 children use a personal login to access spelling and grammar activities on the SPaG.com website. Completing set activities on this website will support the children in their progress towards the expected standard in the end of key stage assessment.
Information about the SATS 2018
Children will complete SATS assessments in 2018. Please download and read the document below to find out more about the purpose and focus of these assessments.
The children will continue to have daily phonics lessons this year as they continue their development through the phases outlined in the document, Letters and Sounds.
Phonics lessons in Year 2 will extend beyond this knowledge, with increasing focus on developing age-appropriate confidence in applying different grammar rules.
Children who scored below the threshold mark in June 2017 will complete the phonics check assessment again in June 2018. Checking out the video link and looking at the 2015 example will give you a clear understanding of the format of this assessment.
It is now our spring term. Year 2 will be doing their class assembly about stories by the same author.
The children have been told to wear casual clothes, possibly something with yellow in it.
See you there.
Welcome back to Autumn term 2. This term the children will be taught by our two Sheffield Hallam University teaching students , Mrs Sams and Miss Hawley.
